ICC Championship Trophy is the 2nd most important tournament in terms of the popularity in the cricket world which succeeds the world cup. It is basically a 50 over tournament which is played for maximum of 2 weeks, whereas the world cup lasts for months. This didn’t actually follow any fixed or any rigid procedure of the tournament since it was first inaugurated in 1998. The tournament that was the very first to take place in Dhaka, Bangladesh was called to be the ‘Knock-Out’ tournament. The tournament did hold its title in the 2nd edition in 2000 played in Kenya, too. In those particular tournaments only 8 and 10 matches were played successively.
This tournament has gone through lots of changes after this. in 2002 edition 12 teams competed ,played in Srilanka. The 2004 tournament was also played with 12 teams and held in England. In 2006, there was a kind of change in term of the tournament format. 8 teams participated in that ,among them 6 teams were the top 6 test playing nations and 2 teams were selected from a pre-tournament round robin qualifying round. Zimbabwe and West-Indies happened to get qualified ahead of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. The tournament that was supposed to be held in 2008 Pakistan was postponed because of the denial of some countries to visit Pakistan. This tournament was then played in the year of 2009 in South-Africa.
This year’s Champions trophy is going to be held for the last time, declared by ICC. The tournament that is currently known as Round-Robin tournament was mostly won by Australia like other tournaments. They are the current champion as well. This year’s tournament is going to take place in England on 6th of June. 8 top teams in the ICC ranking are competing. Bangladesh after showing lots of promises to participate in this year’s tournament lost its luck just before the tournament because of the inconceivable loss against Zimbabwe.
