Keeping the English conditions in mind, South Africa have announced a squad with as many as four pace all-rounders in it. But Bangladesh squad doesn’t even consist a single genuine pace all-rounder. But when the issue was raised during the announcement of Bangladesh’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and tri-nation series in Ireland, chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu claimed “the captain” Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is Bangladesh’s pace all-rounder. The selectors can certainly keep their faith in Mashrafe. And the Narail Express justified his talent as someone capable of batting and hitting the ball hard down the order many a times before. Even in the warm-up match prior to the ODIs against Sri Lanka, Mashrafe had played a whirlwind 58-run innings. The chief selector believes one or two such innings in the Champions Trophy in England can change the entire dimension of Bangladesh’s campaign.
Asked why there isn’t any pace all-rounder in the squad with Mohammad Saifuddin kept as just a stand-by, the chief selector said: “We have just started to take pace all-rounders in the team. We played Saifuddin in a couple of T20Is. But he has to develop himself a lot and establish in the international arena before getting bigger shots.”
