Cricket to be included in Commonwealth Games 2022 if Birmingham wins bidMen’s cricket could return in the Commonwealth Games of 2022 if Birmingham will win the bid of becoming the host city. The preferred form is T20.

Birmingham has been invited for the bid by the Government of United Kingdom after Durban which was originally scheduled to be the host city but was also forced to withdraw the name on account of political and financial issues.

Besides Birmingham, some cities of Canada, Malaysia and Australia are on the line of bidding for 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Cricket is not currently on the mandatory sports list to be included in the Commonwealth Games but has been inserted in the optional list that a host city will have the power to incorporate in the games’ schedule.

“We feel we have a very strong bid. Usually cities have seven years to prepare to host such an event, but we are certain we can deliver an outstanding games in 2022 that includes men’s and women’s cricket” – said Neil Snowball to ESPNcricinfo, the Warwickshire Chief Executive and member of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games bid company.

It can be noted that women’s cricket has already been scheduled in the Durban’s game list but Neil Snowball said the inclusion of men’s cricket is subject of agreement between ECB and ICC.
