Mumbai Indians batsmen came to bat first in the Super Over. Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard was opening, with James Faulkner the bowler for Gujarat Lions. Buttler rotated the strike in the very first ball by taking a single. The next two balls saw a four and a six by Pollard. Then he was caught out by Aaron Finch in the fourth ball. Buttler too got out in the next ball, and hence Mumbai were all out with one ball to spare (as only three batsmen can bat in a Super Over).

In response, Finch and Brendon McCullum came to get the chase done for Gujarat, and Jaspreet Bumrah was the bowler. Bumrah conceded a no ball in the very first ball. Then he gave a bye run in the next one, and then another single in the following dlivery. McCullum failed to connect the bat with the ball in the fourth ball. Gujarat got two singles in the next two balls. Eventually they could make only 6 runs in the over, and lost the match by 5 runs.

Earlier in the match proper, chasing the 154-run target set by Gujarat, Mumbai had been all-out on 153 runs to set up an epic Super Over clash. Parthiv Patel had scored 70 runs off 44 balls to take Mumbai near the finish line, with Gujarat making 153 runs for the loss of 9 wickets after coming to bat first.
