Australia beat Sri Lanka in last-over thriller

Australia have beaten Sri Lanka in a hard-fought warm-up match for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2017 at the Kennington Oval Stadium in London on Friday (May 26).

Winning the toss, Australia sent Sri Lanka to bat first. Rising on Angelo Mathews’ 95 which was well complimented by Asela Gunaratne’s 70, the islanders put on a huge total of 318 runs for the loss of seven wickets on the board in their stipulated 50 overs. For Australia, Moises Henriques took three wickets.

In response to the huge target set by Sri Lanka, Australia looked in a bit discomfort initially, but eventually sailed to victory in a thrilling last-over contest with two balls and as many wickets in hand.

IPL’s orange cap holder David Warner was out for just 15 runs. However, the other opener Aaron Finch took the responsibility on his own shoulders, and played a glorious innings of 137 runs off 109 balls. His innings was decorated with 11 fours and 6 sixes.

Travis Head also starred with the bat, and he remained till the end with a magnificent knock of 85 runs to make sure the Yellow Army get over the line.

Australia have been bracketed into Group A alongside Bangladesh, New Zealand and hosts England in the Champions Trophy, while Sri Lanka are in the Group B with Pakistan, India and South Africa. The tournament will kick-start on June 1 with the match between Bangladesh and England.
