With their latest 5-wicket victory over New Zealand – their first ever against the Kiwis away from home, Bangladesh not only moved to No.6 in the ICC ODI Team Rankings, but they have also all but confirmed their direct participation in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Bangladesh are now No.6 in the Rankings. According to ICC rules, the deadline to be among the top 8 teams in the world and acquire the ticket to directly play the next World Cup is September 30. With 93 points to their name, Bangladesh are now on equal points with 7th ranked Sri Lanka, 5 points clear with the 8th ranked Pakistan and 14 points clear with the 9th ranked West Indies.
As Pakistan will participate in the ICC Champions Trophy, there’s slim chance that they could outnumber Bangladesh in the Rankings. Same goes for Sri Lanka as well. But as the West Indians are out of the Champions Trophy, there’s hardly any chance for them to make up the 14-point difference with Bangladesh and get themselves among the top 8 teams withing September 30.
So, it can now be said that there’s no more confusion regarding Bangladesh’s direct participation in the next 50-over World Cup.
