‘Bangladesh shouldn’t be here’

Lara insults Bangladesh

In 2006 when Bangladesh played in the ICC Champions Trophy for the last time, West Indies legend Brian Lara produced one of the most talked about quotes regarding Bangladesh in the history of the tournament.

Before West Indies’ match against Bangladesh, Lara claimed that Bangladesh didn’t deserve to play in the tournament.

“If Zimbabwe was not here for this tournament you might say Bangladesh shouldn’t be here as well,” said Lara.

However in the later part of his statement, he also didn’t shy away from conceding to Bangladesh’s then-recent successes against the teams like Pakistan and Australia.

“But they’ve beaten Pakistan and Australia and you have to give them the opportunity. It’s good for cricket on the whole and we just have to accept that.” said Lara.

Bangladesh got fired up hearing Lara’s words, but in the field they couldn’t do anything at all, and ended up losing the match by 10 wickets.

Interestingly, Bangladesh are going to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy this year after 11 long years, and this time, West Indies are not part of this because of being behind the Tigers in the ICC ODI Team Rankings.
