Anil Kumble is not being given an extension as the BCCI has already started to invite applications for the position. The BCCI said in a statement that,”The process has been initiated since the term of the current coach, Mr Anil Kumble concludes with the Champions Trophy.”

Kumble has been a vocal supporter of fee hike for players and proposed for a significant 150% hike for grade A players in the central contract and substantial raise for the support staff. That’s perhaps the reason why he hasn’t been given a contract extension despite team India’s consistent performance.

“To ensure a fair and completely transparent process, a nominee of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) will oversee the entire process along with the Cricket Advisory Committee,” the statement added.

BCCI’s three member Cricket Advisory Committee consists of Indian cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. They will conduct interviews of the interested candidates. These former cricketers were also in the panel that appointed Anil Kumble as India’s head coach last year.

Will this sudden news have a negative impact on India’s performance in the Champions Trophy is still up for the debate.
