We will look at the squads of all teams and show which sides are the more experienced ones and which are less experienced. The numbers given are the number of matches played by all the players of the squad of a team.
India, 1582 matches: The Indian squad under the captaincy of Virat Kohli is the most experienced squad of this year’s Champions Trophy. They have six players to experience over 100 ODIs. MS Dhoni has played 286 ODIs so far.
Sri Lanka, 1330 matches: Going into the tournament as underdogs, Sri Lanka are second to India in this list. With the likes of Lasith Malinga and Upul Tharanga, they have a squad consisting of youngsters and seniors. Like India, they also have six players to play more than hundred ODIs. Tharanga has played the most, 201 ODIs.
South Africa, 1228 matches: In-form South Africa have a balanced squad of experienced and some exciting youngsters. Captain AB de Villiers has played the most ODIs, 219 (214 for South Africa). Besides, Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy and Morne Morkel also experienced 100+ ODIs.
Bangladesh, 1156 matches: The newcomer Bangladesh is the fourth most experienced side of this tournament. They have Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have experienced over 140 ODIs. Mashrafe has played 175 matches, 173 of them are for Bangladesh. They have a good mixture of newcomers and senior players. Bangladesh are the most experienced side of Group A.
New Zealand, 1033 matches: New Zealand are one of the dark horses in this event. They have four players to have played 100+ ODIs. Ross Taylor has played the most, 187. They have few guys who can change the game.
Pakistan, 881 matches: ‘Unpredictable’ Pakistan are probably the most underrated team of CT 2017. They have only Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez to playe 100+ ODIs. Malik played 247 ODIs for Pakistan. But except Sarfraz Ahmed and couple of players, other members are far less experienced. Two of the players haven’t yet made debut.
England, 808 matches: The English side are going to the tournament as hot favourites. They lack in experience, but not in power. They only have captain Eoin Morgan to play over hundred ODIs. He represented England 158 times out of his 181. England have been the most consistent side since 2015 World Cup.
Australia, 607 matches: Interestingly, Australia are the least experienced side of this tournament. None has played 100 ODIs. Their skipper Steve Smith has played 95 ODIs which is the most in this squad. But this side have some world-class players who can take Australia to title victory.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 will begin on June 1. The Final will be played on June 18.
