After 11 years Bangladesh is set to make a comeback in the ICC Champions Trophy. And its not like they have somehow just clawed there way into the top 8. They are going to begin this competition ranked 6th in the world in the 50 over format. But as the competition is going to take place in unfamiliar English conditions and being placed in a very tough group, doing well in this tournament is going to be very difficult for them. So to do well Bangladesh needs to start well from the very beginning. Their 1st match is tomorrow against the hosts and one of the favourites to win the tournament England.
Let’s look at some of the key points for Bangladesh if they want secure a victory against England.
1. Keeping the the English openers at bay: England has two very explosive batsmen at the top of the order. If Alex Hales and Jason Roy get going they will be quite a force to reckon with. Roy boasts of an ODI strike rate of 102.19, whereas his partner in crime Hales too has a strike rate of over 95. So the Bangladeshi bowling attack has to get rid of this dangerous duo very swiftly otherwise they will take the match out of Bangladesh’s reach.
2. Spin attack: Although the match is going to take place in London, spinners will have to play a crucial role for Bangladesh. England players have never been known to be good players of the turning ball. Bangladesh needs to capitalize on this and look to exploit this weakness. The Tigers have quite a few spinners like Shakib Al Hasan, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah who can create a lot of problems for the English batters.
3. Tackling the raw pace: England might lack experience in the fast bowling department but there’s no dearth of raw pace. Both Jake Ball and Mark Wood can easily tick the high 140s and they have the ability to swing it both ways in testing conditions. David Willy too is a wily bowler and very threatening in seaming conditions. And when required Ben Stokes comes in with a happy knack of picking up wickets in crucial stages.Bangladeshi batsmen, especially the top order has to be very wary and careful in tackling this bowling line up.
4.Death bowling: The English lower order is packed with big hitters like Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler. The have the ability to take apart any bowling line up and chase down any stiff total. So death bowling is going to be crucial. Bangladesh has to be very accurate and precise in their death bowling. Mustafiz and Rubel are the main weapons in Bangladesh’s death bowling. They also need support from experienced bowlers like Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Shakib Al Hasan to tackle these big hitters.
5.Constraining the X-Factor: Ben Stokes is being deemed as the X-factor in the England side. He bowls well and can hit the big shots lower down the order. Also, he is coming off a very successful Indian Premier League (IPL) where he pocketed 12 wickets and scored 316 runs from 12 outings. He scored a century against Bangladesh in the 2016 ODI series and played a pivotal role in England’s triumph in Bangladesh. He is a big impact player for England. so keeping Ben Stokes quiet with both bat and ball is crucial for Bangladesh.
