Preview: Bangladesh vs England, CT17 Match-1

Bangladesh vs England Preview

Having never managed to make it past the league stage in three prior trips to the tournament, Bangladesh will hope to make an impact in this ICC Champions Trophy 2017 for sure. And the journey to success should begin just from the word go – when they face the hosts and tournament favourites England in the opening game, at the Oval in England on Thursday (June 1). Beating England on the world stage is nothing new for Bangladesh. They did it in the 2011 World Cup at home, then also in the 2015 World Cup in Australia. Specially who can forget that historic victory that saw Bangladesh eliminate England out of the World Cup in the group stage. With two full, straight and swinging deliveries in Adelaide, Rubel Hossain knocked England out the World Cup, ensuring Bangladesh’s maiden quarter-final berth.

The Champions Trophy opener is set to feature several survivors on both sides from Bangladesh’s 2015 World Cup win over England, when a hundred from Mahmudullah and aggressive seam bowling from Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Taskin Ahmed, and of course Rubel, propelled the Tigers to a memorable success at the Adelaide Oval.

However, both Bangladesh and England are now before quite a tricky position. There are two reasons for a team to get demoralized – either if they succumb to a narrow defeat, or if they suffer a heavy loss. And this says it all. England collapsed against South Africa. Bangladesh met the same fate against India during the warm-up match. Champions Trophy opener shall set the tone for both the teams.

For Tigers, strike early with the ball should be the key, while they should also improve both their bowling and batting at the death overs. To add to that, they must take every opportunity given to them. The swinging ball at the 4th stump line looks to be England’s weakness. If Bangladesh top 4 can get starts, they will be in a good spot to win a match which should no more be termed as ‘shock’ or ‘upset’.

The match will kick-start at 3.30pm BdST, with the toss taking place 30 minutes early. Gazi Television, Maasranga Television, Bangladesh Television and the Star Sports Network will telecast the match live, while the official streaming will be available on Hotstar.
