Rising Pune Supergiant defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs in the Indian Premier League 2017 Qualifier 1 at Wankhede Stadium to book a place in the final. Chasing 163, Mumbai were restricted to 142 for nine in 20 overs.

Steven Smith’s side continued their domination as they record their third consecutive win over Mumbai Indians. Pune, playing in their second season, march into the maiden IPL finals courtesy this win. Mumbai Indians will now take on the winner of the second qualifier between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Mumbai Indians got off to a poor start losing opener Lendl Simmons (5) in the fifth over. Simmons was run-out at non-striker’s end when a straight shot from Parthiv Patel’s bat hit stumps before touching bowler Shardul Thakur’s fingertips.

In next over, Washington Sundar further dented Mumbai by picking two crucial wickets. The young spinner first trapped MI captain Rohit Sharma (1) in front of the wickets and then three balls later had Ambati Rayudu caught at short mid-wicket for a duck. Rayudu’s wicket left Mumbai tottering at 41 for three. Things got worse for the hosts when Sundar picked his third wicket. The spinner accounted for dangerous Kieron Pollard (7) to put Pune in commanding position.

Mumbai then kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were never allowed to make a comeback. Parthiv kept Mumbai’s hopes alive with a fighting 52, but Thakur removed him in the 15th over to make it 103 for seven for the home side. The required run-rate eventually kept climbing, and tail-enders were left with too much to do. Sunder ended with figures of 3/16 in his four overs while Thakur picked 3/37.

Earlier, put to bat Rising Pune Supergiant after losing two early wickets went on to post a competitive total on the board. MS Dhoni’s 26-ball 40 provided RPS with a much-needed impetus towards the end. Ajinkya Rahane and Manoj Tiwary also contributed with valuable half-centuries.
