Bangladesh have created history by rising to the No.6 of the ICC ODI Team Rankings for the first time on Wednesday when they beat New Zealand by 5 wickets in the last match of tri-nation series in Ireland. [নিউজটি বাংলায় পড়ুনঃ র্যাংকিংয়ে ৫ নাম্বারে উঠা কতোটা কঠিন বাংলাদেশের জন্য?]
However, it will be very tough for Bangladesh to step into the next landmark of rankings any time soon. While Bangladesh are now at six with 93 points, 5th ranked England have 111 points, which means 18 points clear ahead of the Tigers.
A rating is worked out by dividing the points scored by the match/series total, with the answer given to the nearest whole number. It can be compared with a batting average but with points instead of total runs scored and a match/series total instead of number of times dismissed.
Following every series, teams receive a certain number of points, based on a mathematical formula. This formula is based on only two factors – the series result and the relative ratings of the two teams going into the series. Each team’s new points total is then divided by its new match/series total to give an updated rating.
Bangladesh’s next stoppage will be in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in England and Wales, where they have been bracketed into same group alongside England, Australia and New Zealand. All those sides are ahead of the Tigers in the rankings, so beating any of them will help Bangladesh gain some points. Still that won’t be enough to make up the huge 18-point difference with England.
