‘Sabbir should understand the importance of batting as No.3’

sabbir should understand no.3 importance

Immediately after his arrival in Ireland following the 9-day conditioning camp in Sussex did Sabbir Rahman got a three-digit score. Bangladesh got flurry of runs at Belfast in the warm-up match against Ireland riding on Sabbir Rahman’s brilliant century. [বাংলায় পড়ুনঃ সাব্বিরকে বুঝতে হবে তিন নম্বর জায়গাটির মূল্য]

But then, Sabbir failed miserably in the first two matches of the tri-series against Ireland and New Zealand, scoring 0 and 1 respectively. However, he got to some rhythm again in the next two matches, getting 35 and 65 runs.

Sabbir didn’t play in the warm-up match against Pakistan the other day. He made his comeback to the playing XI in the India match on Tuesday, but couldn’t add anything to his account, and added more misery in what Bangladesh were eventually all-out for 84 runs to concede a 240-run defeat to their arch-rivals India.

Scoring a duck is nothing noteworthy for a batsman. Things can happen at times. But the way Sabbir got out caught everyone’s eye. He had no feet movement or whatsoever. He just tried to smash the ball standing still, missed it and gor his stumps uprooted by Umesh Yadav.

Number three position generally belongs to the best batsman of the side. Whether or not Sabbir is the best batsman of Bangladesh side is another topic. But at least we can assume he has a technically sound batting style to be batting at number three. If so, how could he get dismissed in such a manner?

Now let’s see how ‘good’ Sabbir did so far in this most precious batting position. So far he has batted as the No.3 batsman on 12 occasions, and scored 347 runs at 28.91 with three fifties to his name. Numbers show Sabbir hasn’t been able to do justice to the class of a No.3 batsman.

Bangladesh’s first international skipper Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu believes things aren’t going quite right for the hazel-eyed batsman, and he needs to understand the significance and importance of batting as the No.3 batsman.

“He is a very important wicket of the team. Batsmen like Viv Richards, Arvind de Silva, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting uses to bat at number three. Now Virat Kohli does it. So Sabbir should understand his responsibility. It’s better if he started thinking about this in a different way,” said Lipu.
