Sunil Narine’s batting inspires Taijul

Over the years, there have been numerous examples of cricketers who started out as bowlers or batsmen but sharpened their ability in the other department with time and eventually became specialist in that department for their sides.

Known as a specialist spinner for Bangladesh’s Test side, Taijul Islam also had started his cricket career as a specialist batsman but later turned himself into a bowler. In a recent interview, Taijul has shared the story of turning into a bowler from a batsman.

“I was mainly an opening batsman but during playing u-18s cricket I got a lot of wickets. Later I was selected for u-19s team as a bowler,” Taijul told.

He added, “On that time, I thought it would be difficult to maintain both batting and bowling at a time. I thought nothing would work perfectly if I concentrate on both. So I decided to concrete on bowling more.”

In recent time, Sunil Narine who has stunned the cricketing world with his surprising batting in the top-order, is someone who can be an inspiration to the players like Taijul. And no surprise that Taijul also gets inspired seeing Narine’s batting.

“Obviously, Sunil Narine’s batting inspires me a lot. Chances were given to him and he proved himself successful. Other players also would be inspired seeing that,” Taijul said.

He further added, “If I am asked now to open the innings or play attacking, I don’t think I would be able to do that. But if a longer period of time like 6-7 months or a year is given to me, I would be able to do that. I have that confidence.”

The 25-year old cricketer wants to be a better cricketer in all three departments which would help him to be a regular member for Bangladesh’s ODI side too. He even now practice batting in the nets.

“It becomes easier to play in every formats of cricket when you can bat well. I will try to do well in all three batting-bowling-field departments and get a place in the ODI team,” Taijul told.

“Mohammedan coach Sohel Islam gives opportunity to me to practice batting in the nets. But I am not a solid batsman yet. It has already been ten years since I was an opener,” he concluded.
