Bangladesh suffered a humiliating 240-run defeat at the hands of India in the second warm-up match ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 on Tuesday. But now, the greater concern for Bangladesh is the number one all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s being out of form. [নিউজটি বাংলায় পড়ুনঃ ‘সাকিবের বিকল্প ভাবার সময় এসে গেছে’]

Shakib has been looking for his lost touch ever since he went to England late after the IPL. He has already played four international matches and two warm-up matches, but yet to get a fifty or pick up three wickets.

Though Shakib did well in New Zealand and Sri Lanka with the bat in hand, there’s no doubt he hasn’t been any good of late like what he once used to be.

In his last 8 ODI innings, Shakib hit three fifties. At the same time, he got two centuries including one double century and two fifties in Test cricket this year. But bowling has been a big let-down for him. In his last 13 ODI innings, Shakib took three-wicket haul just once, and two-wicket haul thrice. He finished with one wicket thrice, and in other 6 innings he simply went wicketless.

Bangladesh’s first international captain Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu is of the opinion that it is high time Shakib reconsidered about his performance, while the selectors started finding a replacement for Shakib.

“To be honest, I think we should already start looking for someone who could replace a player of Shakib’s class. It’s not that Shakib is finished. But he has completed 10 years in international cricket, and now definitely he is not at the best of times.

“He still has a lot of cricket left in him, which he should enjoy. However, we can no more rely on Shakib only. If you have noticed, the other players were carrying Shakib in the tri-series and the warm-ups. Players like Tamim, Soumya, Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah rose to the occasion, so the off-form of Shakib was overshadowed,” Lipu said.

The former Bangladesh captain also urged the maverick all-rounder to return to form, “Shakib needs to come back to his best as soon as possible, and when he does, Bangladesh will become a dangerous side again.”
