Bangladesh qualified for the semis after they defeated New Zealand by five wickets in Cardiff. They received a point from the washout game against Australia at The Oval. England defeated Australia which knocked the Aussies out of the tournament. Bangladesh were through to the semi-finals for the first time in an ICC event.
India got two wins from three matches in Group B. They beat Pakistan in their first game convincingly and then received a shocking loss from Sri Lanka by seven wickets which created a risk for them to be knocked out.
But the defending champions under Virat Kohli came hard at South Africa at The Oval. It was a must-win game for both the sides. India became victorious by eight wickets with 12 overs to go chasing 192.
Bangladesh had faced India earlier in the warm-up game at The Oval on June 30. In reply to India’s 324/7, Bangladesh were dismissed for 84 runs in 23.5 overs. India won that game by 240 runs.
It will be the third time in ICC ODI events that Bangladesh and India will take on each other. In 2007 World Cup match in Port of Spain, Bangladesh beat India by five wickets which is still known as one of the greatest upsets. In 2015 WC Quarter-final in Melbourne, India knocked Bangladesh by 109 runs.
In the latest meeting between these two sides in ODIs, India defeated Bangladesh by 77 runs in the third ODI in Dhaka in 2015. However, that series was won by the Tigers 2-1 which may give them a confidence before the semi-final match.
