Though Bangladesh couldn’t live up to the expectations in the semifinal, and clinical India totally dominated the match, still there was a lot to take from the match and also the entire tournament for Bangladesh.
When asked about Bangladesh’s story throughout the tournament, Indian legendary batsman Rahul Dravid reckoned that it’s high time Bangladesh took a decision, and that’s on their 50-over captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza.
“Bangladesh have a lot to take from this tournament. Now that they are out of it, there’s a lot of thinking left for them. One of them must be about Mashrafe, their captain,” said Dravid.
“Clearly, as you saw in the field, Mashrafe is still the best bowler of the side, and once again he proved it today. But the 2019 World Cup is in just two years, and they have to decide if he can last for two more years,” he added.
Mashrafe has already taken retirement from the T20 format earlier this year during the tour of Sri Lanka, while he hasn’t played a Test match in last 8 years. So whether or not he will participate in the 2019 World Cup remains a big question to be answered.
But as far as Mashrafe’s individual performance is concerned, he is undoubtedly one of the finest players Bangladesh have to offer. While he was the only successful bowler in the semifinal, taking one at expense of 29 runs in 8 overs, in batting he also remained not out on 30 of 25 balls with the help of 5 fours.
