Ahead of Bangladesh’s crucial do-or-die fixture in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 against Australia on Monday (June 5), ESPNcricinfo’s expert analyst Ajit Agarkar said he would like to see the Tigers team management bring spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz into the side in place of Mosaddek Hossain Saikat. While Agarkar believes Bangladesh should let go of one batsman for the sake of a bowler, he believed a slow bowler in the form of a spinner should be the best choice, as pace option meant too luxury against a team like Australia.
“Bangladesh played with 8 batsmen against England in their first match. But I think going into the next one against Australia, they should re-adjust their combination, and add one more bowler to their arsenal instead.
“Bangladesh top-order were among the runs and in good form as we saw in the first match. So batting shouldn’t be a concern, which is not the case with their bowler.
“You see, even if they put up a 300-plus total on the board, that shouldn’t be a big problem for Australia to scale down if they don’t have that extra strength in their bowling. So I believe one more bowler in place of a batsman should be the plan in place.
“I would rather have a slow bowler, someone like Mehedi Hasan Miraz. Because spinners can do well against Australia. Four pacers can hardly be an option against the Aussies unless the pitch is totally a green,” the former India pacer concluded.
