The toss was won by the hosts as they opted to bowl. Australia lost dangerous David Warner early for 21. Skipper Steve Smith stood up big time. He made a 96-run partnership with Aaron Finch. Finch scored a brisk 16th ODI fifty, 68 off 64 hitting 8 boundaries.
Smith made an important 77-ball 56 with 5 fours. Mark Wood got the better of him as the Aussies were dropped down to 4/181. Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell took their responsibilities. The added 58 runs for the fifth wicket. Maxwell was sent back for 20 by Wood with a sensational catch from Jason Roy at deep mid-wicket.
Leg-spinner Adil Rashid created more troubles for Australia as he went through the middle and lower orders. He bowled a superb spell of four wickets for 41 runs in ten overs.
Australia were collapsing at the death. 300+ total was looking out of the sight. But Head continued on and smashed unbeaten 71 runs from 64 deliveries hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes. He gave his team a competitive score.
Seamer Wood also took four wickets as Rashid. He cost 33 runs only in his ten-over spell. Ben Stokes was expensive for his one for 61 in eight overs.
