On the occasion of their 91st anniversary, West Indies cricket board has rebranded both the board and the team. From now on, the cricket team of West Indies comprises of several sovereign island nations will be officially termed as ‘WINDIES’. And the cricket board is to be named Cricket West Indies (CWI).
The boards CEO stated the name ‘Cricket West Indies’ ‘better reflects how the organization operates’.
On the other hand, Cricket West Indies President Dave Cameron said ‘the name is more inclusive and appropriate as the board wants to recognize the valuable role that our players, territorial boards, staff, supporters, government, coaches, match officials and volunteers play in the organization.’
Meanwhile the name ‘Windies’ is associated with the cricket team representing Caribbean island nations – a team once as ferocious as to dominate the world, now is in a disarray and had been thrown out of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy for staying below per ranking.
