june 15, 2017: biggest day in bangladesh cricket history

Is this Bangladesh-India semifinal match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 semifinal the biggest and most important match in the history of Bangladesh cricket?

Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza may be confused about it and claim that he doesn’t think so. But in reality, it really is.

Never before did Bangladesh take the field on such a big occasion, with the stakes at such height. Their first Test, 50th Test or the recent 100th Test, each and every one was very important and also significant.

But none of them was as glorious as this Bangladesh-India match-up in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Bangladesh made to the Super 8 in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 in the West Indies. Again they reached the quarterfinal of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand.

But to be honest, none of those success meant so much as compared to this semifinal berth in the Champions Trophy.

You can certainly say World Cup is a bigger event than the Champions Trophy. No denying. But still, reaching the semifinal of this 8-nation tournament means something different. It means we are one of the top four teams in the world.

And that becomes even more remarkable when it is Bangladesh’s maiden appearance in the last four of an ICC event.

Only twice did Bangladesh reached a multi-national tournament final. Asia Cup 2012 and Asia Cup 2016. The first one was in the 50-over format, and the last one in the 20-over format.

But those were simply subcontinental championships. Not a worldwide event at all.

And here in this Championship, a world event in all sense, we are just one step away from the dream final. Just one win needed. And then, bang! For the first time ever, we are in the summit clash of a world event.

Today is June 15, 2017. Brace yourself, this is the biggest day in our cricket history so far. From now on, we can only go forward. There’s no looking back.

This is a moment Bangladesh cricket, as well as 160 million Bangladeshis, have waited for a long time. And as the moment is drawing near, it’s time to savor.
