SA could miss du Plessis for Lord's Test

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis could miss the first of the four Tests against England at Lord’s Cricket Ground, which starts on July 6. He is in a ‘race against time’ to play the match.

du Plessis went back home after the Champions Trophy campaign. He is awaiting for the arrival of his first child, who is expected in the first week of July. His wife Imari chooses a natural birth without speeding up to date.

The Proteas T20I and Test skipper will be missing the three match T20I series, which begins on Wednesday in Southampton. AB de Villiers will be leading the side in absence of him.

“I’m pretty nervous, to be honest. It’s now just a countdown for when the baby comes. My wife is pretty certain that she wants to go the normal route so that takes longer. It now becomes a race for the first Test match,” du Plessis said at the launch of CSA’s Global T20 league on Monday.

de Villiers has kept himself away from England Tests. So, it is likely that Hashim Amla will lead the side for the first Test if du Plessis misses out. Amla resigned from Test captaincy in January 2016. Dean Elgar or JP Duminy could also lead South Africa.
