The current no.1 all-rounder in the 50 over format, Shakib Al Hasan wants to capitalize the opportunity to make it to the semifinals of the Champions Trophy, after they shared a point with Australia as their match got abandoned due to rain.
Batting first Bangladesh put together a meager total of 182 against Australia. Tamim Iqbal did the bulk of the scoring, with a dazzling 95 run innings. Australia were cruising in what seemed to be like an easy run chase. But 16 overs into the 2nd innings rain started pouring and the match couldn’t restart from then on. As both the sides didn’t play out 20 overs each, the match ended without a victor and Bangladesh fortunately derived 1 point from what seemed to be like a losing cause.
Shakib agrees that Bangladesh were lucky to get a point after such a dismal batting performence. But now he wants to capitalize on this good fortune and win their next match against New Zealand.
“Now what we need to do is win the next match against New Zealand. Luck favored us.Australia were unlucky,” he said.”We are fortunate to still be alive in the competition after such a poor performance. Hopefully we can make good use of this good fortune.”
Shakib also said that comparing to Australia, New Zealand is a much more familiar opposition for Bangladesh and that can help Bangladesh to put up a much better performance against the Kiwis.
“We played against Australia in a ODI after 6 years. Most of the players in the team haven’t faced Australia before. New Zealand by comparison is a much more familiar opposition,” said Shakib.
However Shakib’s own form has been sketchy as of late. Shakib is hopeful that he and the other players are going to lift up their shoulders in the next match and seize this incredible opportunity.
