In the pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrows match against Bangladesh Smith was asked about what challenges his side is going face against Bangladesh. Smith answered by bringing up Bangladesh’s batting heroics against England in the Champions Trophy opener. He mentioned Tamim’ brilliant innings, but as he was saying Mushfiq’s name he stuttered. Then he described Mushfiq as a “young” player.

“I think they’ve got a few dangerous batters. Obviously we saw Tamim Iqbal the other day playing a really good innings.” Then he stumbled a little and said, ” I can’t pronounce his name, Mushfiq the keeper or Mushfiqur is his name? he is a good young player.”

Mushfiqur Rahim debuted for Bangladesh in 2005 and his been playing in the international circuit for more than a decade. Smith debuted for Australia in 2010. He first started of as a leg spinner who could bat a bit down the order. But now has transformed himself onto one of the best batsman in the world of cricket.

It’s obvious that Smith didn’t do it on purpose. But the incident is surprising because the Australian side are scheduled to tour Bangladesh this year for a test series. And Mushfiqur Rahim is the test captain of Bangladesh. And ignoring details of the opposition is not the sign of a great captain.
