Living legend of Sri Lankan cricket, Muttiah Muralitharan has said that even he, alongside other Sri Lankan greats like Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara can’t turn around Sri Lanka cricket’s fortune overnight.
The Sri Lankan side is going through a very tough period, recently losing a 5 match ODI series against Zimbabwe in their home turf. In these dire states many Lankan cricket fans were hoping that the above mentioned cricketing greats will step in and help the side to get out of this predicament. But Murali has reminded everyone that it’s not that simple, as they all have current commitments.
“Since my retirement, I have not been involved in Sri Lankan cricket,” he said. “It’s been 5-6 years. I don’t understand what’s happening there. Without being aware of the situation, I don’t think it will be right for me to comment. However, there is definitely a problem. The performance of the team has dipped and they will have to rectify it. Bringing in Sangakkara, Jayawardene or me won’t be a solution because we are all busy with other commitments. Sangakkara is still playing cricket and Mahela is busy with coaching commitments just like me. So, they will have to look for a solution themselves,” said the highest wicket taker in the history of Test match cricket.
Sri Lanka are to play a 3 match Test series against India. Al though the matches are going to take place in Sri Lanka, Murali is not giving the Sri Lankan side much of a chance against India.
Here is what he had to say about the upcoming Test series,“Obviously, India will start as favorites. In Sri Lanka, I’m not too sure how the pitches will play. When India visit, they might get flat wickets. But Ashwin and Jadeja will do very well. The Sri Lankans are not playing well at the moment and both of them can capitalise on that advantage.”
