Malinga to captain Sri Lanka in fourth ODI

Pacer Lasith Malinga will lead Sri Lanka in the absence of injured Chamara Kapugedara hurt his back during the third One-Day International, in the fourth ODI of the five-match series against India in Colombo on Thursday.

The Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that Malinga would captain the team in Colombo this week, two months after being fined and handed suspension for comments he made following the ICC Champions Trophy in June.

Although Malinga will step in his place for the fourth ODI to be played on Thursday, Upul Tharanga will return to lead the side in the fifth ODI

Earlier, during the Test series against India, Sri Lanka used two captains in veteran spinner Rangana Herath who had to come in to replace Dinesh Chandimal. The hosts lost the Test series 0-3 and have already lost the five-match ODI series against India 0-3.

To be noted, Malinga’s appointment is the fifth captaincy change to the Sri Lankan side in their last seven competitive matches.
