Prodigious Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has set a new milestone in the longest format of the game after he slammed Malinda Pushpakumara for 26 runs in an over during the second day of the third Test in Pallekele on Sunday.
Pandya, who made his debut in the opening Test of the series at Galle, set a new India Test record when he took 26 runs off the first five balls of a Malinda Pushpakumara over, eclipsing the previous record of 24 set by Sandeep Patil in 1982 and equaled by legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev in 1990.
Another boundary off the final ball of the over would have taken Pandya past Brian Lara and George Bailey’s jointly held Test record of 28 for the most runs scored off a single over.
Batting at No.8 and playing in his third Test, the 23-year-old smashed eight fours and seven sixes in his blitzkrieg as India were bowled out for 487 first over after lunch. Pandya was the last man to be dismissed when he was caught at sweeper cover by Diruwan Perera off Lakshan Sandakan for 108 off 96 balls. His seven sixes are now most by an Indian away from home.
