Starting the day at 2/109 chasing 265 for victory, David Warner and Steve Smith looked like they might pilot Australia to an unlikely win, but the home side’s spinners took control to take 8/86 and end the day on a high.

Cricket stars past and present were quick to congratulate Bangladesh on its showing, delighting in one of cricket’s lesser names toppling a powerhouse.

Apart from the cricket stars, world media also has heaped praise on the Mushfiqur Rahim led side. Here’s how World Media reacted to yesterday’s historic occasion :

“Bangladesh claim historic Test victory as Australia capitulate,” said popular British daily newspaper, The Guardian.

“Tigers claim maiden win over Australia,” said Cricket Australia on their official website cricket.com.au.

“Bangladesh wins series-opening Test in Dhaka by 20 runs for first win over Australia,” said ABC news.

“History made as Tigers beat Aussies for first time,” said The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Australians lose to Bangladesh,” said Gladstone Observer

“Tigers down Australia for the first time,” said SuperSport. “Bangladesh spun their way to a first test victory over Australia on Wednesday, with Shakib Al Hasan’s second five-wicket haul of the match securing a memorable 20-run win inside four days.”

“Bangladesh celebrate first Test victory over Australia by banging their bats in dressing room,” headlined the UK based newspaper The Telegraph.

Popular website Mirror said, “The Baggy Greens slumped to a 20-run defeat in Mirpur hours after England suffered a shock defeat to West Indies.”

“Dhaka delight as Bangladesh Tigers maul Australia,” headlined Scotland based popular news portal The Scotsman.
They claimed Shakib Al Hasan as the hero of the match, “Shakib was the Tigers’ hero with match figures of 10 for 153, in addition to a first-innings 84.

Popular Australia based news portal SBS News criticized the Aussie players by bringing the pay dispute issue. “Aussies outshone despite huge pay gulf,” the said “After fighting tooth and nail to secure a lucrative pay deal, Australia’s cricketers succumbed within four days to a Bangladesh side that earns a fraction of their salaries.”

India based popular news portal Times of India considered the victory as Tigers’s arrival in Test cricket. “Bangladesh announces its arrival in Test cricket with a hard fought win over Australia,”

The New Indian Express said it Bangladesh’s win shouldn’t be considered as an upset. “Why Bangladesh’s win against Australia is no surprise,” they headlined.

The UK based sports news portal Eurosport headlined, “Bangladesh talisman Shakib backs words with action in Dhaka.” They also heaped special praise on Shakib Al Hasan as they said : “Shakib Al Hasan stayed true to his word after his all-round excellence helped secure Bangladesh’s maiden test victory against Australia at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday.”

Pakistan based website The Nation headlined, “Shakib stars with ten-for in historic Bangladesh win against Australia.”

International news agency Reuters headlined : “Bangladesh stun Australia as underdogs triumph in first test. The West Australian headlined, “Warner century can’t save Aussies”

South Africa based Times Live headlined : “Shakib brilliance helps Bangladesh to maiden Test match win over Australia.” Sport24 said, “Bangladesh stun Australia for historic Test win.”
