Number one ranked all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan on Wednesday afternoon, visited Rangpur city and spoke in support of an Awami League (AL) city corporation mayor candidate.
Shakib, one of the most popular public figure of the country in recent times, asked the people of Rangpur to vote for him (Rashek), who, he believed, would improve conditions in Rangpur city and turn it into an ideal town.
The programme was organised by the Rangpur City Corporation and held at Rokeya Begum University grounds. Although the program was scheduled to start at noon, it was delayed by an hour due to overflowing crowds.
The 30-year old all-rounder, who was invited to Rangpur by the mayor candidate, spoke and sought votes on behalf of Rangpur City Corporation Mayor Candidate Rashek Rahman.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Awami League President Shafiqur Rahman sharply criticized Shakib’s speech. “Camping for someone and asking people to vote for him (Rashek) is not his (Shakib) responsibility,” he was quoted as saying on Dhaka Tribune.
