To secure a direct berth to the World Cup, the Caribbean team needed to clean sweep over England. The hosts thrashed West Indies by 7 wickets in the series opener at the Old Trafford.
With September 30 as the cut-off date for direct qualifications, Sri Lanka has now 86 points in hand eclipsing West Indies who carries 78 points.
Sri Lanka’s ODI skipper Upul Tharanga expressed joys over the team’s automatic selection said on Tuesday, “It’s no secret that we have been going through a tough time. But I want to say a big, big thank you to our fans who’ve kept faith with us when things looked bleak.”
He added, “ICC events have always brought out the magic in Sri Lanka cricket, and I look forward to proving that once again.
“We have a clear plan toward the World Cup, and we will work hard at achieving each step.
“I know you will see Sri Lanka’s special brand of cricket out there once again soon.”
The World Cup 2019 to be staged in England is scheduled to occur from May 30 to July 15.
