Forbes calculates the brand value of an athlete by excluding salaries and bonuses from their sport and all investment incomes and deducting the average income of the top 10 athletes in the same sport.
Before Kohli, ex-Indian skipper MS Dhoni was among the top 10 athletes till 2016. He was fifth in 2014 with $20m, a million less than 2013’s value. However, his brand value came down to $11m in 2016 from $21m in 2015.
Kohli was appointed Test captain in late 2014 after Dhoni’s retirement from the format. This year, the World Cup-winning captain handed over ODI and T20I captaincy as well to Kohli. The 28-year-old batsman has been a huge brand in cricket since then.
