India have hammered Sri Lanka by an innings and 239 runs in the second Test in Nagpur. It’s their joint-biggest Test win. In 2007, they beat Bangladesh by the same margin in Mirpur. It’s also Sri Lanka’s worst defeat in Tests.
Sri Lanka started the fourth day with 21 runs for the loss of one wicket in nine overs. The first session turned out to be devastating for the visitors. They started to lose wickets right from the beginning.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who required four wickets to take his 300th scalp, struck thrice in quick time. With Sri Lanka losing seven wickets in the session, the play was extended to 15 minutes before lunch. But Ashwin had to wait more.
The Lankans went to the lunch with 145/8. Skipper Dinesh Chandimal was on 53* while Suranga Lakmal was playing supportive role.
Umesh Yadav took the ninth wicket of the innings by dismissing Chandimal with a loose ball. Chadimal made 82-ball 61 including 10 fours. It was then a race between Umesh and Ashwin. The fast bowler was on 99 Test wickets with the spin king on 299 wickets at the other end.
In the end it was Ashwin who had the last laugh as he bowled Lahiru Gamage with a carrom ball to finish Sri Lanka’s innings for 166 runs in 49.3 overs. India are now leading the series 1-0.
Ashwin became the fastest to 300 Test wickets. He took 4 for 63 in 17.3 overs. He took another four-fer in the first innings.
Earlier in the match, India posted mammoth 610/6 in their first innings in reply to Sri Lanka’s 205 with the help of four tons. Virat Kohli was named Man of the Match for scoring his fifth double hundred, 213.
