The Ashes: Late wickets put Australia on top

The wait is over and the Ashes has kicked off at Melbourne on Thursday. The day 1 of the first test match ended in thrills and excitement with a jam packed crowd and late wickets has put Australia on top in the first day.

England elected to bat first after winning the toss and England started steadily in a track which looked slightly flat. Despite of losing Alastair Cook early, Stoneman and Vince built up a slow but a very effect partnership.

Both of the batsmen reached the milestone of half century but then Pat Cummins brought the breakthrough and dismissed Stoneman for 53 runs .

England were looking solid with Vince and skipper Joe Root at the crease until Nathan Lyon made a game changing throw to run out Vince for 83.

With stumps right around the corner, Cummins again brought a crucial breakthrough and this time it was the English captain. The Umpire gave not out at first but the Aussie captain Steven Smith reviewed it and it was a successful review in the end.

England finished 196/4 on the first day with Moen Ali (13*) and Malan (28*) at the crease. The man of the day for Australia was Cummins who picked up 2 wickets including 6 maidens.
