With already losing the series with one match to go, Sri Lanka had one last chance to end the tour with some pride, but the Lions couldn’t fight hard as they lost the last match of the series by five wickets.
India elected to field first in a track which looked difficult to score runs quickly and it proved to be right in the end as Sri Lanka managed to score only 135 runs in their 20 overs.
The top order failed miserably and both the openers lost their wicket early. Samarawickrama and Gunaratne showed some fighting spirit in the middle and Gunaratne’s 36 from 37 balls was the highest score in the Sri Lankan innings. Unadkat and Hardik Pandya both picked up 2 wickets but it was Unadkat who was the pick of the man as he conceded just 15 runs from his 4 overs.
In reply, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who is in red hot form started off well once again and played a quick knock of 27 off 20 balls which was more than enough to keep them in a comfortable position to chase. Iyer and Manish Pandey both were solid together and they built a match winning partnership.
In the end, both the wicket-keepers of the team Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni guided the team to a comfortably victory by 5 wickets and 4 balls remaining. With this, Sri Lanka’s yet another disappointing tour has come to an end. They need to regroup under their new coach Chandika Hathurusingha who has come to take on a mission. On the other hand, India who has been in a terrific form at home this year will be on their way to South Africa to prove themselves outside sub-continent.
