The Aussie skipper’s marvelous 102 not out took him to join with the greatest batsman of all time Sir Donald Bradman to score four consecutive hundreds at the prestigious Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Scoring 1,305 Test runs this year, Smith ended as the highest run getter of 2017 in the elite form of cricket. he carried an average of 76.76.
This is, however, the fourth time successively that Steven Smith scored a thousand plus runs in a calendar year. He became the second batsman to do so after Mathew Hayden.
Moreover, Smith equals Ricky Ponting’s record as only batsman to score six Test tons in a calendar year.
In 49 Tests and 84 innings, Smith has scored 23 hundreds, and amassed 5,235 runs at an average of 76.93.
In 2014, Smith scored 1,146 runs at an average of 81.85 while in 2015, he amassed 1,474 runs at an average of 73.70. In 2016, the Australian run-machine scored 1,079 runs with an average of 71.93.
Steve Smith has also become the third quickest batsman to reach 23 Test hundreds. He achieved the landmark in 110 innings, after Don Bradman (59) and Sunil Gavaskar (109). Mohammad Yusuf took 122 innings to reach the milestone while Tendulkar got there in 123 innings.
Australia is leading the Ashes series this year 3-0 with fifth and final Test to begin from January 4.
