Smith reached his hundred in 138 balls on day three morning. The moment he reached 112 with a cover drive for four, he completed 1000 Test runs in 2017. He has been doing this from 2014. He is only the 11th to score 1000 runs four times and the second to do it on four successive occasions.
Matthew Hayden (2001-2005) scored 1000 in a year five times. Brian Lara (2003-2005), Marcus Trescothik (2003-2005) and Kevin Pietersen (2006-2008) crossed 1000 in three consecutive years.
However, Smith is the only one to score over 1000 runs at 50+ average in four successive years. He has the most number of centuries in a four-year span, 20. Hayden made 19 in 2001-2004 and 2002-2005. Ricky Ponting also had 19 tons during 2003-2006 period.
The most runs in a four-year period is 5077 by Ponting in 2003-2006 at 72.52. Smith currently has over 4750 runs (fifth-highest) at 73+ average. He will still have an average of over 73 if he gets out in the first innings.
With reaching his 22nd Test hundred, Smith is the third-fastest to achieve it (108 innings). Don Bradman took 58 innings while Sunil Gavaskar did it in 101 innings.
The Australian captain has now 14 Test hundreds as captain, the joint fifth-highest. He took only 29 Tests to get those hundreds.
