West Indies stand-in captain Kraigg Brathwaite sent New Zealand to bat first. Openers Jeet Raval and Tom Latham added 65 runs. Miguel Cummins made inroad for West Indies by dismissing Latham for 22 runs.
The Blackcaps had the control when Raval and skipper Kane Williamson put on 89-run stand for the second wicket. Williamson fell for 43 runs off 96 balls with 5 fours. Raval went soon after scoring 157-ball 84 runs including 15 boundaries.
New Zealand middle-order collapse as they lost four wickets for 35 runs (154/1 to 189/5). Henry Nicholls became debutant Raymon Reifer’ first Test wicket. Colin de Grandhomme and Mitchell Santner helped the hosts recover with a 76-run partnership. Grandhomme reached his second Test fifty in 50 balls after a watchful start.
West Indies fought back again after they sent Santer for 73-ball 24. Grandhomme was dismissed for 58 runs off 63 deliveries hitting 5 fours and 4 sixes.
Tom Blundell (12*) and Neil Wagner (1*) saw the rest of the day safely as the Kiwis are 286/7 in 87 overs after the first day. Shannon Gabriel took three wickets for 83 runs. Cummins picked up two for 33 in 16 overs.
