Bangladesh will be playing without their regular captain Shakib Al Hasan, who is out for two weeks with finger injury. Mahmudullah is not declaring Bangladesh favourites but feels his side will have the advantage of home conditions.
“I can’t tell Bangladesh as favourites. Sri Lanka are doing well in Tests. But I personally believe we will be on top in our home conditions.
“I still feel there is balance in the team although Shakib is missing. We have quality spinners, pace bowlers and positive batsmen. I hope we can do well at any stage of the game,” he said.
As a skipper, Mahmudullah is calm-headed. He wants a team performance from every member so that his works get easier. Bangladesh do have the seniors like Tamim Iqbal, ex-skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and comeback man Abdur Razzak.
“If everyone performs as a team captaincy gets very easy. We always perform as a team and it will be our target on this occasion too. Things will be easier if this happens. Our team has handful of experienced cricketers and the juniors are also cooperative,” he added.
Bangladesh lost both Tests in South Africa without Shakib. Before that, they drew with Australia 1-1 at home. In recent Test face-off with Sri Lanka, they won by four wickets in Colombo in 2017. Sri Lanka lost 0-1 in three Tests in India last year.
