Mathews to become Sri Lanka’s captain again, convinced by Hathurusingha

Angelo Mathews, after stepping down as Sri Lanka’s captain six months ago is set to become the captain once again for the upcoming tri-nation series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

After a a humiliating series defeat against Zimbabwe, Mathews stepped down. Then the board was in a dilemma to select the new captain.  In the end, it is Mathews again who will take the responsibility.

Some reports suggest that the new coach Chandika Hathutusingha convinced Mathews to become the captain once again. A cricket official told one of the online cricket portal: “Angelo agreed to take over the reins after Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha convinced him. The selectors spoke to him on Monday after training and he will be announced as the new captain Tuesday morning.”

Since Mathews quit as captain, Sri Lanka have been in disarray in limited overs cricket. In 2017, they lost 23 of the 29 ODIs. Mathews missed quite a bit of cricket in 2017 due to a series of ankle, hamstring and quadriceps injuries.

Sri Lanka will play two Tests and two T20 Internationals in Bangladesh after the tri-nation series.
