Munro, bowlers lift NZ to series win, no.1 in rankings

New Zealand have left West Indies winless in the tour as they seal the three-match T20I series by 2-0 with a 119-run win in the third T20I at Bay Oval, Maunt Maunganui. With this win, they are back at number one position in T20I rankings.

The Blackcaps elected to bat first in the final T20I. Openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro gave the hosts to a dominant start. They added 63 runs in the powerplay. Munro raced to his third consecutive fifty in 26 balls while Guptill took 31 balls for his 11th T20I half-century.

The opening pair added 136 runs in 11.3 overs. Guptill became debutant Rayad Emrit’s maiden wicket after scoring 63 runs off 38 balls including 5 fours and 2 sixes. Glenn Phillips put on 55-run stand for the second wicket with Munro. He scored 14-ball 20.

Munro created history by scoring his third T20I hundred in 47 balls. He became the first man to hit three centuries in T20I cricket. He made 104 runs from 53 deliveries with 3 fours and 10 sizes.

Skipper Kane Williamson played a cameo innings of 19 runs from 8 balls. New Zealand posted the seventh-highest T20I total, 243/5 in 20 overs. This broke their seven-year old T20I high score 214/6.

In reply, West Indies lost Chadwick Walton on the first ball off Tim Southee. Chris Gayle failed to fire as he also fell for a duck in the first over. The tourists made 73/4 in the powerplay. Andre Fletcher top-scored the innings with 32-ball 46 hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes.

West Indies lost their momentum after losing all their upper-order batsmen. In the end, they were bowled out for 124 runs in 16.3 overs. Shai Hope didn’t bat after sustaining a shoulder injury this match.

New Zealand registered their highest margin of victory by 119 runs. This is the third-biggest victory in T20Is.

Southee took three wickets for the Kiwis. Trent Boult and Ish Sodhi notched up two wickets each.
