India have sent a second-string side with resting skipper Virat Kohli, experienced MS Dhoni, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hadrik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. Rohit Sharma will be leading the side in Tuesday’s opening game against Sri Lanka.
Despite those key players being rested, Hathurusingha is not underestimating India at all but he thinks Sri Lanka are head of Bangladesh mentally.
“If you go by the rankings, India is the top team in the tournament, so they always start ahead of the other teams,” said Hathurusingha ahead of the T20I tri-series.
“Whoever plays for India, it is still a very strong team. We have to start well because we haven’t been doing well at home. With Bangladesh, because of the last series, we probably have a little edge over them mentally.”
Sri Lanka found momentum in Bangladesh tour where they won ODI tri-series (including Zimbabwe), Test series and T20I series. This was Hathuru’s first assignment as Lankan coach. He hopes to start well here as well.
“It will help if we start well again. Bangladesh series is in the past. Whether we bat or bowl, I reiterate we need to start well. That would help us to get the momentum in this tournament.”
