Shakib Al Hasan has returned to Bangladesh squad for today’s knockout match against Sri Lanka at Colombo. However, according to Courtney Walsh, the star all-rounder will be available for selection if he is fit.
Shakib was firstly named as captain in Bangladesh squad for Nidahas Trophy tri-series. But he had pull out due to finger injury. After recovering from the injury he attended a practice session at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
On Thursday, Bangladesh Cricket Board made a sudden decision of calling Shakib back into the squad. The all-rounder left for Sri Lanka on a Sri Lankan airlines flight, which was delayed for Shakib.
Bangladesh team is delighted at Shakib’s inclusion. But interim head coach said that the T20I captain will be considered for playing XI once he passes fitness test.
“Like any other player he will be assessed. If he is fit, he will be considered for selection. We are hoping he will be fit enough to play. He had a net session in Dhaka. There won’t be any confusion,” said Walsh at the press conference.
“We were hoping to have him from the beginning of the tournament. He was always part of the set-up. We knew he was going to make a comeback if there was any chance for him. It is nothing to worry about. Once Shakib is fit, we are going to welcome him to the team.”
Mahmudullah Riyad captained Bangladesh in two Tests and five T20Is in absence of Shakib. The Tigers won only one match in the tri-series chasing 215 against Sri Lanka.
