UAE demolish Zimbabwe’s WC dreams

United Arab Emirates have knocked Zimbabwe out of contentions for 2019 World Cup as they seal a 3-run win (DLS) against the hosts in the super six game of qualifiers at Harare Sports Club.

Zimbabwe sent UAE to bat first. UAE posted 235/7 in 47.5 overs before rain interrupted the play. UAE’s innings didn’t resume since then. Rameez Shahzad top-scored with 59 off 61 balls including 4 fours and 2 sixes. Ghulam Shabbir scored 40 off 62. Mohammad Naveed hammered 10-ball 20* in the end.

Sikandar Raza bagged three wickets for 49 runs. Tendai Chatara took 2/49. Zimbabwe’s target was set to 230 in 40 overs.

In the run-chase, Zimbabwe lost three crucial wickets for 45 runs. The likes of Hamilton Masakadza and Brendan Taylor were back in the hut. Peter Moor and Sean Williams steadied Zimbabwe’s innings in a 79-run stand.

Moor scored 39 off 61. Williams made another crucial partnership with Sikandar Raza which gave the hosts high hope of qualifying for the World Cup. Raza entertained the Harare crowd with 26-ball 34 hitting 2 fours and a six. Williams hit run-a-ball 80 including 5 fours and a six.

UAE skipper Rohan Mustafa changed the momentum of the game by sending both these batsmen in two separate overs. Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer was dismissed for a duck as well.

Zimbabwe required 15 runs to win off the last ball. Mohammad Naveed defending those runs against Craig Ervine and Kyle Jarvis. With six requiring off the last ball, Ervine mishit a full-toss and ended up scoring two runs.

UAE got a famous victory of 3 runs. Naveed was named Man of the Match for his 3/40 in 8 overs.

It’s the first time Zimbabwe will not be playing the World Cup since 1979. Friday’s winner between Ireland and Afghanistan will go through to World Cup 2019 in England and Wales.
