Warner, along with his captain Steve Smith and opening batsman Cameron Bancroft was sent back home for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal during the third Test match in Cape Town.
Sunrisers Hyderabad CEO K. Shanmugam announced on Twitter: “In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain of SunRisers Hyderabad. The new captain of the team will be announced shortly.”
Smith, who was banned by the International Cricket Council for one Test and fined 100% of his match fee, has already stepped down as captain of Rajasthan Royals. Ajinkya Rahane has replaced him as captain.
Smith had admitted that his side deliberately tried to tamper with the condition of the ball in order to make the ball swing more. Bancroft was caught on television cameras appearing to rub a yellow object on the ball before he was reported by the umpires.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Cricket Australia (CA) have announced that Smith and Warner has been banned for 1 year while Bancroft has been banned for nine months. All players will have the right to challenge their verdicts and also the durarion of their penalties via a CA code of behaviour hearing with an independent commissioner, who can also choose whether the hearing is public or private.
