Although being thrown out of the competition fairly long ago, Delhi Daredevils exhibited a spirited performance in the field against Mumbai Indians at the Feroz Shah Kotla resulting an 11 run win over the defending champions leaving Mumbai eliminated from this year’s Indian Premier League.
The 55th match of the season was Mumbai Indian’s last opportunity to qualify in the last four. With three more balls to spare in the innings, Mumbai were bundled out scoring 163 runs.
The pre match equation was fairer one for Mumbai; owning a better run rate than Rajasthan Royals, they were one win away to book the last spot in the top four.
Delhi Daredevils won the toss and went for bat first. A half century from Rishabh Pant speared the team’s innings to cross past 150 runs. Pant in assistant of Vijay Shankar threw a 64 runs fourth wicket partnership dragged the team innings to 174 for the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs.
With 4 shots of fours and equal number of sixes, Pant’s 64 runs came off 44 deliveries while Shankar reached 43 runs playing 30 balls striking 3 boundaries and 2 maximums. He was unbeaten.
In reply, Mumbai Indians were tripped up in the beginning by Daredevils’ Nepali recruit Sandeep Lamicchane. Suryakumar Yadav fall into the trap right away in the fourth delivery of the first over, caught by Vijay Shankar after scoring 12 runs in first 3 deliveries.
Therefore it was no coming back for Mumbai Indians’ batsmen who repeatedly been seen out of control against Delhi Daredevils’ bowlers especially Sandeep Lamicchane, Amit Mishra and Harshal Patel, all of them allocated 9 wickets of Mumbai Indians among them.
Evin Lewis and Ben Cutting were sole survivors in the Mumbai Indians batting line up. Lewis missed the half century for 2 runs, scoring 48 out of 31 deliveries hitting 3 fours and 4 sixes. Late in the order, Ben Cutting stood for 37 runs in 20 balls.
The elimination of Mumbai Indians opened up the competition for the last spot in the play off.
Both Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab will lock horns for a ticket to be placed in the top four.
Kings XI Punjab, having one more match in hand, will have to win against Chennai Super Kings along with exceeding the existing run rate of Rajasthan Royals.
