Seperate coaches for different formats?

Bangladesh Cricket Board is considering to appoint separate coaches for white-ball and red-ball cricket. However, it is not finalised yet as discussions continue with Gary Kirsten, the internal auditor of Bangladesh.

Seperate coaches for different formats?

Separate coaches for different formats is very rare but also not new. England and Australia have done that in the past. In 2012, Ashley Giles was named England’s limited-overs coach while Andy Flower had the responsibility for Tests.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon feels that Bangladesh need to have different mentality for separate formats.

“There should be separate coaches for red ball and white ball. Or we could have two or three consultants under the head coach, for the different formats. We need to keep the specialization of these formats in mind because we cannot really rely on the same mentality. We have to give more importance to Tests,” he told media on Monday.

“The coaches we have spoken to, none of them are interested in Test cricket. They are ready to take charge of the ODI and T20 teams. This change in mindset, particularly after T20s have come, is why Kirsten feels we should have separate red and white ball coaches. But we are still discussing if we can have separate batting coaches under a head coach.”

Kirsten, who is on a three-day tour, feels Bangladesh should have someone who can prepare for 2018 World Cup in England and Wales.

“We have spoken about that [but] we haven’t finalised that yet. I think that is where modern cricket is going. The key is what’s for the best interest of the team, bearing in mind that we are a year away from the World Cup. So that’s the focus, to make sure the best coaches are available to prepare the team for the World Cup,” said Kirsten.

Kirsten will leave Dhaka on Tuesday. He is expected to return Dhaka again before Tigers leave for Windies.
