15-year-old cricketer awarded BCCI contract


A 15-year-old cricketer has been awarded a central contract by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The 15-year-old is in Grade C.

Shafali Verma, thje teen prodigy, was added to BCCI’s player contract announced on Thursday (January 16). She is also a part of India’s squad for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 to be held next month.

Verma has already taken part in nine T20Is for India, and she will be one of the most promising youngsters to watch out for at the marquee tournament.

Verma’s stakes went higher as she recently played a magnificent 124-run knock from just 78 balls against Australia A in Brisbane. That knock featured 19 fours alongside four sixes.

A total of 11 players have been handed a Grade C contract, and Verma is one of them. This list also includes newly contracted players like Priya Punia and Harleen Deol.

The Grade A contracts have been handed to Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, India’s T20I skipper and her deputy, alongside the all-rounder Poonam Yadav.

Meanwhile, the ODI skipper Mithali Raj has been moved to Grade B after retiring from T20I cricket in September last year. Another veteran, fast bowler Jhulan Goswami is also under the same contract as Raj after hanging up her T20I boots last August.

A Grade B promotion, however, happened to the wicketkeeper batter Taniya Bhatia and spinner Radha Yadav.

Grade A (INR 50 lakh): Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Poonam Yadav

Grade B (INR 30 lakh): Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Ekta Bisht, Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Taniya Bhatia

Grade C (INR 10 lakh): Veda Krishnamurthy, Punam Raut, Anuja Patil, Mansi Joshi, D. Hemlatha, Arundhati Reddy, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Pooja Vastrakar, Harleen Deol, Priya Punia, Shafali Verma
