de Villiers came into the crease when South Africa were two wickets down and the run rate was 5. The right-hander decided to take on the Bangladeshi bowlers and completed his hundred in 68 balls.
The 33-year-old fell 24 runs short of a double hundred but did entertain the Boland Park crowd with 176 runs off 104 balls at a strike rate of 169. His innings included 15 fours and 7 sixes.
de Villiers surpassed his previous ODI highest score of 162*. His 176 is the fourth-highest by a South African after Gary Kirsten (188* vs UAE), Faf du Plessis (185 vs SL) and Quinton de Kock (178 vs Aus). It is also the third-highest score by any against Bangladesh after Charles Coventry’s 194* and Shane Watson’s 185*.
AB scored his first ODI hundred against Bangladesh and became only the seventh to score hundreds against all full-member nations (excluding Ireland and Afghanistan). Ricky Ponting, Herschelle Gibbs, Sachin Tendulkar, Hashim Amla, Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor were the previous men to achieve this feat.
With seven sixes, de Villiers has joined the 200 club. He has 201 sixes in ODI cricket currently. Shahid Afridi, Sanath Jayasuriya , Chris Gayle, MS Dhoni and Brendon McCullum are the other players to hit over 200 sixes in ODIs.
Wednesday’s innings was the fifth score of 175+ innings in 2017 ODIs. David Warner (179 vs Pak), du Plessis (185 vs SL), Martin Guptill (180* vs SA) and Evin Lewis (176* vs Eng) were the other batsmen to achieve the big score this year.
