All-rounder Thisara Perera’s brilliant last over helped Rangpur Riders to restrict the defending champions Dhaka Dynamites to 139 while chasing a target of 143.
Having been asked to bat first at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Rangpur Riders got a flying star depending on opener Chris Gayle’s first half century in this season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
The Caribbean dashing batsman smashed five fours and four sixes in his 28-ball 51 runs innings. Although his opening partner Brendon Mccullam went back to the pavilion early, Mohammad Mithun, the wicketkeeper-batsman, gave him good support with a useful 22.
However, Dynamites skipper Shakib Al Hasan’s brilliant bowling at the later part of the innings helped the defending champions to restrict Rangpur Riders to 142.
While chasing a target of 143, Dhaka Dynamites lost two early wickets but Evin Lewis and Jahurul Islam tackled the situation in that moment as they scored 28 and 29 respectively.
With 15 needed off 14 balls, Rubel Hossain prised out Mehedi Maruf LBW and that started the slide for Dynamites. In the penultimate over, Lasith Malinga was able to keep Pollard quiet and dislodged Nadif Chowdhury, which meant Perera had 10 runs to defend in the final over.
Although Perera was hit for a Six by Pollard, he came back very strongly by picking up two wickets in last 2 balls of the match.
To be noted, Rangpur Riders now have six points and are placed fifth on the table with Dynamites slotting in at second with nine points
Brief scores: Rangpur Riders 142 in 19.5 overs (Chris Gayle 51; Shakib Al Hasan 5-16) beat Dhaka Dynamites 139 in 20 overs (Jahurul Islam 29, Evin Lewis 28; Sohag Gazi 2-18) by 3 runs.
